Urban Overheating: Lucie Merlier Presents Adaptation Strategies at the Launch Event of the Year of Engineering

The Year of Engineering is a national initiative led by the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, the CNRS, and the Academy of Technologies. It aims to highlight the essential role of engineering in providing concrete responses and innovative solutions to major contemporary challenges. This nationwide science outreach initiative connects the worlds of research, education, and innovation, with the goal of promoting engineering and technology among teachers and students, and demonstrating their key role in building a sustainable, responsible, and desirable future.

During the launch event, held on October 1, 2025, at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris, professionals, researchers, and educators gathered to mark the beginning of this national initiative. Lucie Merlier was invited to give a short scientific talk on her research topic. Her presentation, entitled “Urban Overheating: Problems, Solutions & Adaptation Challenges”, explored the issues raised by the increasing frequency and intensity of urban heatwaves and their impacts on public health and well-being. She then highlighted the importance of implementing integrated adaptation strategies—combining green, grey, and soft solutions—to foster more resilient and comfortable cities in the face of climate change.
