MARKOS POULOS RECEIVES THE 3rd PRIZE FOR BEST POSTER COMMUNICATION AT THE “PHONONICS 2023” INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
During the international conference dedicated to the study of phonons "PHONONICS 2023", the third prize for best poster communication was awarded to Markos Poulos, doctoral student at CETHIL in the research theme "Micro and NanoThermal". The conference took place from May 12 to 16, 2023 in Manchester.
This conference had as its theme the analysis and manipulation of phonons (vibrations of atoms in condensed matter), depending on researchers interested in phononic crystals, acoustic, elastic, nano-phononic and thermal meta-materials, meta-surfaces, the propagation of acoustic waves in periodic structures, the transport of phonons, optomechanics or even the coupling between phonons.
The work presented by Markos Poulos under the title “Thermal Rectification using Aometrically Perforated Graphene” concerns the manipulation of the thermal properties of graphene (2-dimensional form of carbon) by nanoperforation (creation of pores on the nanoscale). During his presentation, Markos showed that even with low porosity, the thermal properties of graphene are affected considerably and even more so, by applying an asymmetric perforation pattern, thermal rectification can be achieved. In other words, the system conducts heat more easily in one direction than the other, and thus functions as a thermal diode.
